Having a mentor

Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines a mentor as “an experienced and trusted advisor”. I define it as someone you rely on to give you the knowledge and support you need for your career path. Over the course of my careers, I have been fortunate to have had several amazing mentors.

When I decided to finally begin my journey as a writer, I turned to one of my tried-and-true mentors. This person has been there for me when I embarked on my financial management career, and guided me as I climbed the banking corporate ladder.

Throughout the years I have followed her as she trailblazed her path not only in the financial sector, but also as a writer. So, there was no question who I should turn to when I made the decision to write my book series.

We met for lunch one day, and I mentioned my idea for my book, but also my fears about starting the process. She raised her hand up and looked at me and said- JUST WRITE. She said not to worry about anything else at first, just write. Everything else will come later, but for now- just write.

So, I did just that. I began to write.

I took the story that has been living in my head for 17 years, and I began to write.

Along the way, I have had countless questions about the book writing and publishing process and even the operational business side of the book. She is always there for me and answers my questions with grace and is never lacking in encouragement.

Finding a mentor may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! We started off as co-workers years ago, and I saw in her the strengths and talents that I wanted to develop. So, I began asking for help, listening to her advice, and then following through with it.

You see, as the mentee, you have to respect that your mentor is successful for a reason. You must respect their time and efforts and bring 150% effort to the mentor/mentee relationship. You have to follow through with your commitments and be ready for constructive feedback.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone that you look up to, to be your mentor. The worst that can happen is they say no, but I can assure you, they more likely will say yes. They will be honored that you have asked them to mentor you and be part of your career path.

As Oprah Winfrey once said, “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” Thank you to the amazing mentors I have had in my life. You all have helped me become the strong leader and woman I am today, whether you mentored me in the military, finance or now in writing. But especially to my dear friend and amazing author A.A. Lewis- I would not be on this path without your support and guidance. You have helped me to see the hope inside myself to bring Always Forward to life.
